Duration: 7 hr
Public · Anyone on or off Facebook
Discover the fascinating legacy of Sir James Douglas, the first governor of British Columbia, who was sworn in at Fort Langley on November 19, 1858. Born in Guyana to a Creole mother and a Scottish father, and later marrying Métis woman, Amelia Connolly, Douglas’s diverse heritage has left a lasting impact on BC’s cultural landscape.
Join us on Saturday, September 21, for a day of learning and celebration. In partnership with the Guyanese Association, this event will offer a unique opportunity to explore our shared history, honor cultural diversity, and reflect on the complexities of Douglas’s legacy. There will be guest speakers, Caribbean Indigenous fusion food for sale, culture performances, and more.

Caribbean Community Centre Initiative:

In a new initiative, the Guyanese Canadian Cultural Association of BC has been working with BCOCCA and its other members to investigate and get funding for a community centre for our larger community. Such a centre would be useful for our meetings, our events – as well as other uses for our many communities.
Consequently, we’re asking our members to do a quick survey to find out information that we can possibly use to make our case. If you could, please try the survey at: Caribbean Community Centre Initiative Survey

Annual General Meeting of the Guyanese Canadian Cultural Association of BC.

Our board has been working together for many years and we would sincerely love to have some fresh board members to help out. If you’ve helped in the past we recognise and appreciate that and hope you might consider coming back. It doesn’t require a lot of work except for occasional meetings to discuss and plan for the future, and when we are having an event, we need more people to take the reins to ensure that the association continues to have the energy required.
Membership dues are $20 per year.
Please note that at this AGM we will be accepting nominations for all Board Positions. The board positions will come into effect at the AGM and remain for the duration of 2024: next AGM expected late 2024 or early 2025.
